Being an Adaptive Generalist

It's not what you know, but how fast you can know it.

"It's not just what you know, but how fast you can know it." That pretty much sums up what I mean by being an Adaptive Generalist. There's so much knowledge out there, I can't learn it all. And even then, My brain only has so much space to hold onto information. So the first part of finding success as an Adaptive Generalist is learning how to learn fast. That requires fast access to information. Humanity went from word of mouth, to the printed word, to radio, to television, and finally the Internet. Everything is right there at either our fingertips or the tip of our tongue, thanks to digital assistants. You just have to know how to ask for it. That's the key skill to have that no one can easily teach you.

The second part of finding success is holding onto that information once you've found it. I've found the digital brain concept invaluable for this. Right now I'm trying out using Obsidian and slowly migrating what I have into it. The ability to not only store information but link it all together in various ways is something I've been seeking for a long time, ever since I first played with HyperCard.

I've been meaning to start a blog for well over a decade. I just never got anything off the ground, because I never thought anything I wrote was good enough. Now I'm at the point where I just want to talk about things and not worry about it so much. A small part of my digital brain will live here as well, as I share interesting things I come across in my work and play. A little about me: I've done a lot of work, and pretty much all of it has to do with the internet. I've been a developer: frontend, backend, network, database, you name it. I've been responsible for the smooth operation of hundreds of machines, both physical and virtual, as well as any number of networks. I was a part of the IETF for a number of years. If I hadn't come up with Adaptive Generalist, I'd probably go with Internet Engineer.
